Taman Pudu Ulu parkrun Event #88 Report

There was a fantastic turnout of 121 participants and 14 volunteers for our 88th event on 7th March 2020 as we celebrated International Women’s Day, along with parkruns worldwide. Purple was the colour for the day and everyone got into the theme, with our volunteers and some walkers, joggers and runners adding a purple tutu to their normal gear as well as some wonderful individual outfits, including Robin and Trixie Lawrence in full formal purple shirts and ties complete with wigs!

We also saw some great achievements among our regular ladies – Pei Yong Gai celebrated her 25th volunteer milestone and Brenda Ong and Wan Mei Ling both achieved their 50th parkrun milestone, having completed all 50 of their finishes at TPU. On the course we saw an incredible PB time of 20:30 from Julie Foreman, improving her already impressive time by almost 20 seconds and giving her a new age-graded performance record (based on world best by age) of 86.9% - It was also Julie’s 30th first finish at TPU! Other Ladies achieving new PB’s were Aisling Murray (2nd finisher in 22:42), Chuah Zi Wei, Gan Yeap, Isabel Thomas, Mandy Morecock, Ronita Radzi and Sixia Huang. Our Event Ambassador Emer Breen also dusted off her running shoes to be 3rd finisher in 24:41, complete with tutu.

We had eight first time parkrunners, with a special mention to Lindsey Larock visiting from Thailand, who had planned to run the Malaysia Women’s Marathon on Sunday, but instead was able to join us for her first ever parkrun – and is now keen to do more.
Matt Walkerden, visiting from Australia was first finisher among the men in a time of 19:17, closely followed by another visitor, Michael Bertalli in 19:21, with Harrison Francis next to finish in 20:26.

Taman Pudu Ulu parkrun Event #87 report

Last Saturday witnessed a series of firsts for us: the first parkrun ever to happen on a leap year, the first time we have had more parkrunners since our launch event (we had a massive 164 participants), for Georgina and Pei Yong, the first time they gave the first-timers and run briefing respectively, for 46 of you the first time ever to parkrun and for 21 of you the first time to try parkrun at Taman Pudu Ulu. Wow! As a community, we should be so proud of these achievements and thanks to all of you for coming along and helping us grow.

IMG_20200229_123702In addition it was the first time the Smart Athletics Club (Malaysia)  attended our parkrun and we thank them for bringing along 47 of their team. We had one Malaysian participant form ANSARA, Taiping runners and we would love if he could spread the parkrun love to Taiping. Wouldn't it be great to get a parkrun established there!

IMG_20200229_122025

We had five visitors from the UK and 3 from Singapore. These included Pris Chew who featured our parkrun in a blog post. Linda Boscic, a run director from the UK completed her 249th parkrun and hopes to celebrate her 250th milestone at Singapore this coming Saturday. We wish her well with that and congratulate her for reaching such dizzy heights.

It was first time for Taman Pudu Ulu regular  Christina Lee who celebrated her 50th parkrun and for Gan Pei Yong celebrating her 25th volunteer milestone. Well done ladies!

IMG_20200229_212648Congratulations to Eugene TG Gan for finishing as first male in a time of 20 minutes and to Anna Driga Ferguson who, in the age 15-17 age group, finished as first lady. in 23 mins 16 seconds. Special mention to the lovely Seona Mac Kenzie who had the highest age-graded performance of the day.

Rupert Lawrence also deserves a special mention. He is training for his International Award at school and completed his parkrun with a backpack with a 4kg weight inside. Rupert’s post parkrun breakfast at Restoran Haava was well deserved this week!

PHOTO-2020-02-29-18-30-40Last but not least what a team of volunteers, who although not having experienced this volume of participants before, stayed cool under pressure and managed to have fun at the same time. If you have any spare time over the next few weeks please consider joining our volunteer team. Let us know if you can help at tamanpuduulu@parkrun.com

That’s all for now folks…..

Taman Pudu Ulu parkrun Event #86 report

Heading to the startline

Heading to the startline

The 86th successful Taman Pudu Ulu parkrun took place at 7:30am in the Taman Pudu Ulu Park. It was lovely to see the park hosting so many activities early in the morning. People were walking, running, and doing various fitness classes including Thai chi. The park is beautifully maintained with no trace of any litter. This is probably the best utilised park I've yet seen on my parkrun travels. We were told in the detailed 'First timers' briefing this parkrun event would take place on the 'alternative' course. This is a four lap course on concrete paths with an option to run on wooden boards for one section. Conditions were favourable with 25°C temperature, 6km NNW breeze (hardly noticeable), 17% cloud cover and no precipitation (rain). After a briefing by run director Robin Lawrence we set off. 91 People took part. Well done, especially, to the 15 participants doing this event for the first time. Congratulations to the 18 participants who achieved personal bests.

This event was made possible by more than ten volunteers Bethan Cole, Caroline Murray, Edwin Lawrence, Emer Breen, Khay Ann Yeo, Mohd Annas, Phil Southworth, Rupert Lawrence, Seng Wei Yip, Soo Sim Stephanie To and Stacey Ong who did a wonderful job, encouraging participants to do their best. The event was incredibly well organised. Not only was there a professional photographer, there was even someone shouting out elapsed time as participants passed. Thank you to all the volunteers for doing such a great job in each and every role.

Taman Pudu Ulu parkrun Event #83 Report

Gong Xi Fa Cai! We celebrated the Lunar New Year at TPU on 1st February with a very auspicious 108 participants walking, jogging and running our 5km route – our equal third highest turnout. With the theme colour for the day being red, there was ribbon of colour around the park as everyone completed the four laps of our “alternative” course. At the finish line, mandarin oranges and other festive treats were handed out for all to enjoy.
It was also an additional celebration day as two of our most regular parkrunners reached milestones. Georgina Scambler recorded her 100th parkrun and her 25th finish at TPU, having started parkrunning in Australia in 2015. Or second milestone achiever was Ellen Suppiah who recorded her 50th parkrun, having started her parkrun journey in 2016 in UK. Ellen was part of the core team that helped get parkrun started in Malaysia and she made it a double celebration by also doing her 50th volunteering occasion this week. Well done to you both.
We welcomed 6 new parkrun first timers as well as 11 first time overseas visitors, from UK and Australia and welcomed back 3 returning UK visitors.
First male finisher was visitor Michael Korner, in a speedy 18:58, whilst first lady finisher for an incredible 27th occasion was Julie Foreman in 21:57. Among the 18 new PB’s were notable achievements for Seng Wei Yip, whose 20:17 was his 5th PB in succession, Raphael Dobson who improved by more than 2 ½ minutes to finish in 27:22, Adeline Ng, whose 35:40 improved on her previous best time set a year ago and Chin Chye Guay with a third PB in succession of 40:38.
