Lagenda Presint 18 parkrun Episod 11 : Soo Hoe Hin Tak

uncle

The Legends of Presint 18 parkrun Chapter 10: Khaidir Zakaria

2019-09-30 19_12_25-(3) Presint 18 parkrun, Putrajaya - Photos

1. Tell us a bit about yourself, Khaidir and the club you represent (if any)?

My name is Khaidir Bin Zakaria. I live at Precinct 11, Putrajaya. I am the founder of the PERMATA IHSAN Academy Putrajaya (formerly known as Putrajaya Caring Class) and also Putrajaya Park Runners Club (PPRC). In addition to running, I am also interested in horseback riding, mountain climbing, and traditional archery. The PPRC is part of the Permata Ihsan Academy. The main purpose of establishing this PPRC is to encourage all students and even family members of the academy to be active together on weekends like walking and running in a relaxed and consistent way. Precinct 18 parkrun is one of the best platforms. We want all of our students to practice a healthy lifestyle and be active in and outside of the classroom. The PPRC is also open to all Putrajaya Community residents who want a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

2. How did you find out about parkrun? and parkrun Malaysia? What was your first experience of parkrun?

I accidentally found out about parkrun through STRAVA application account (Putrajaya Running Buddies) from Pak Engku Raja. I used to run around the Saujana Hijau Park and surrounding parks in Putrajaya, either solo or with friends, once in a while. I started joining Precinct18 parkrun, on Jan 1, 2019. After visiting the parkrun.my/presint18 website and read the participation guide, I immediately register my children and my wife. Since then, we have always trying to join parkrun consistently.

3. What do you like most about parkrun?

What I love most about parkrun is the spirit of the volunteering team that is very committed in organising the parkrun activity every Saturday morning. It also made me eager to attend. In addition, the parkrun is also not far from where we live and running alongside the lake is very fun

4. How would you encourage newcomers to try parkrun?

We use social media platforms like STRAVA, facebook, telegram and WhatsApp group to publicize parkrun activities especially to all social media friends, students as well as family members of the PERMATA IHSAN academy.

5. Have you ever volunteered at parkrun and would you motivate others to try volunteering at parkrun?

Yes, so far (2) times as Marshal. I'm really happy to be contributing energy and time for Precinct 18 parkrun. Yes, I will also invite other friends to join as a volunteer.

6. What are your personal ambitions in parkrun? What would you like to see happen to parkrun in Malaysia?

First, I want to be an example to my children and my students in the academy that by living a healthy lifestyle such as participating in a 5K run Precinct 18 parkrun will produce a healthy body and happy family.

Secondly, I hope more community friends and local will join family-friendly recreational activities in Putrajaya as well as parkrun activities, especially on every Saturday morning.

Finally, there are many interesting facilities and gardens in Putrajaya which are suitable to be used as the next park location such as the Saujana Hijau Park, Chancery Park, Wildlife Park, Wetland Park, Botanical Garden, Putra Perdana Park, and surrounding area. With consistent weekend activities such as parkrun, made by a dedicated group of volunteers this will indirectly promote and elevate Putrajaya communities as a healthy, clean and harmonious society.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

1. Ceritakan serba sedikit mengenai diri anda, Khaidir dan kelab yang anda wakili (sekiranya ada)?

Nama saya Khaidir Bin Zakaria.

The Legends of Presint 18 parkrun Chapter 9: Khoo KAY HAO

53067820_2032533047041149_8006794993752604672_o

Question 1 - What is a typical day at parkrun?

I usually go to bed early on Friday as parkrunday begins as early as 530am for me. I usually aim to arrive at around 7am so that I can help the volunteer team set up the start/finish area.

Question 2 - What is your parkrun history?

I got to know about parkrun last year via a Facebook post regarding the launch of Taman Pudu Ulu parkrun. I began my parkrun journey on 26 May 2018 when I ran my first parkrun in 23 minutes and 29 seconds at Taman Pudu Ulu parkrun. I have not looked back since. So far, I have completed 28 parkruns and 10 freedom runs as well as volunteered 15 times.

Question 3 - Why Presint 18?

The scenery is what attracts me to Presint 18 parkrun. I like to run along the beautiful lake. The course is also flat and easily accessible which further motivates me to attend Presint 18 parkrun.

Question 4 - What are your goals at Presint 18?

I have overall parkrun goals. For the foreseeable future, I want to complete 100 parkruns and 100 freedom runs as well as achieve 100 volunteer credits. These are the milestones I am really looking forward to. As for long term goals at parkrun, I want to keep parkrun as part of my healthy lifestyle. My Saturdays will always be dedicated to parkrun.

Question 5 - What would you say to first timers and newbie parkrunners?

I always encourage new people to attend parkrun. It is an absolute joy to see newbies and first timers run, jog or walk on parkrunday at parkrun. I will only say that parkrun will help you stay healthy and make you happy, hence come join the fun.

Question 6 - Tell us your memorable moment at parkrun.

Pacing at parkrun is memorable for me. I feel happy helping parkrunners meet their target pace. The appreciations from them after the run is an added bonus for me.

Question 7 - What do you think about volunteering at parkrun?

For me, volunteers are the blood of parkrun. I appreciate the efforts of every single volunteer at parkrun not only in Malaysia but globally as well. I always make an effort to volunteer as much as I can. It is the best way to give back to the parkrun community. Let’s volunteer whenever we can.

The Legends of Presint 18 parkrun Chapter 8: Zulfikar MOKHTAR & family

56575848_319869465337509_5681163189010563072_n

Question 1 - What is a typical day at parkrun?

We are always excited for parkrun. We will surely go to parkrun if we don’t have any other running events for the weekend. Once we’ve decided to go to parkrun for that particular weekend, that is the moment where our parkrun preparations begin. Juliwati and me usually discuss about what to wear and which strollers to use for parkrun. As soon as I arrive home from work on Friday, I will load 2 strollers into the car’s trunk and transfer both baby seats from Juliwati’s car to my car. Before going to bed, the kid’s food, extra clothing and our running equipment will be packed and kept in the car. As we have 2 small children & 7 pet cats at home, leaving the house quietly on Saturday morning isn’t easy. We wake up at 5am and carry out preparations for our 7 beloved cats (providing food and cleaning their room). Next, we will get ourselves ready for Fajr prayers. We then leave the house and arrive at Presint 18 by 7.15am. This gives us enough time to prepare the strollers, do some warm-up and light stretching.

Question 2 - What is the family’s parkrun history?

It all started back on 21 October 2018, where our beloved Malaysian Stroller Runners Community (MSRC) team captain, Ikmal Abdul Jabar posted on our community official Facebook page recommending team members who live nearby Putrajaya to register and support this event every Saturday morning. If we were not members of MSRC, we may have never known anything about parkrun. Both of us registered for parkrun but at that moment Juliwati was pregnant with our second child hence was not able to run. Fatimah, our elder child and me started our parkrun journey at the Presint 18 parkrun launch on 2 November 2018. Fatimah was only 1 year 7 months old at that time so she wasn’t eligible for a parkrun barcode. Our second child, Ibrahim and Juliwati started their parkrun journey on 1 January 2019 during Presint 18 parkrun New Year’s Day event. Ibrahim was only 2 months old at that time so again ineligible for a parkrun barcode. At almost every parkrun, I will push Fatimah in the stroller and Juliwati will push Ibrahim in the stroller. Once a while, I will push both of them in a double stroller. Juliwati is usually slower than me at parkrun so this gives Fatimah and me enough time to get back on the course and support Ibrahim and her to the finish. This is a beautiful sight for me as we will be running together as a family. Usually towards the end, we will let Fatimah to run on her own for the last few meters towards the finish funnel.

Question 3 - Why Presint 18?

Our home is located in Hillpark Home, Bandar Teknologi Kajang which is only 22km away from Presint 18 parkrun. It’s about a 20 minute-drive to reach there and it’s the closest parkrun to us. Also, the breath-taking scenery of the lake along the running route motivates us to come and run Presint 18 parkrun. One memorable moment we witnessed was a flock of birds flying low just above the lake surface. This sight is rare and unique. You can’t find it anywhere else.

Question 4 - What is the family’s parkrun goals?

Our main goals as a family joining parkrun is to have a fixed routine, living a healthy lifestyle and at the same time maintaining our family bond since we are working parents. Other than that, we would like to have an active social life meeting with other families and runners from different backgrounds as well as our mates from MSRC. Perhaps we can also motivate other parents like us by showing them that with small kids, we can still run and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Question 5 - As stroller runners, what would you and your wife advise first time or newbie stroller parkrunners?

If you love to run or jog and at the same time you have kids, stroller running is the best option for you. Don’t give excuses, just start now with whatever stroller you have. You don’t need a fancy and expensive jogger stroller to start stroller running. Bring whatever you have and try it out at Presint 18 parkrun where the route is very safe and stroller-friendly. If you and your kids love it, please do not hesitate to join our community to get more advice on stroller running. Remember the most important safety rule of stroller running is don’t forget to buckle your kids up while running in order to keep them safe at all times.

Question 6 - How do the children feel about parkrun?

Our children are still too small to enjoy parkrun since most of the time they are sleeping during parkrun. But recently our daughter started to enjoy parkrun by looking at the surroundings (nature and scenery) and by having the opportunity to run on her own towards the finish funnel. The best part for her is after the run, she will meet other friends from the MSRC family.

Question 7 - Tell us a memorable moment for the family at parkrun.

1 January 2019. This marked the day when all 4 of us ran together as a family at Presint 18 parkrun. This is where the memorable moment took place, Fatimah and I came back to accompany Ibrahim and Juliwati all the way to the finish funnel.

Question 8 - As members of the Malaysia Stroller Runners Community (MSRC), parkrun Malaysia’s second largest club (78-registered runners, 234 runs recorded to date), what impact has the club brought to parkrun in Malaysia?

As mentioned earlier, we might have not known about parkrun if we were not members of MSRC. Through MSRC, many members living nearby Putrajaya have ran once at Presint 18 parkrun and some have become regulars just like us. MSRC members not only come to Presint 18 parkrun as runners, some volunteer at parkrun as well.

Question 9 - What does the family think about volunteering at parkrun?

One fine day, we would love to be a part of the volunteer team for the parkrun. Even though this looks tough for us as we need to manage ourselves early in the morning with two kids that are still small but we will find a way to make this happen very soon. As a runner, we are motivated by the support given by the volunteers while we run. The most memorable thing we got from the volunteers are the amazing photos. This is one of the positive things that motivates us to be volunteers. Also, we will be able to give something back to the parkrun community.

The Legends of Presint 18 parkrun Chapter 7: Raja Iskandar SHAH

52678105_2025480501079737_8830426861923205120_o

Question 1 - What is a typical day at Presint 18 parkrun?

A typical parkrun day for me starts early. I usually volunteer so I arrive before 7am. As I usually volunteer as a marshal, my duties require me to ensure all runners/walkers have been safely guided. Hence, I am usually among the last people to leave the run route. Having completed my duties, I tend to chat with fellow volunteer and runners (some that I had only known via Facebook). I arrive home around 10am where I fetch my youngest son for his art class. Then, it is the eager wait for parkrun photos on Facebook and results (if I ran/walked that day) via email. In the evenings, it is either a long run (if I volunteered at parkrun) or preparing for a running event the next day.

Question 2 - What is your parkrun history?

My parkrun story goes back to early 2018. I started volunteering for Harry, Yan, and Aizat such as finding information about possible routes in Putrajaya and subsequently sharing Presint 18 parkrun activities with the Putrajaya running community. Officially, I have volunteered on 11 occasions, ran 4 times at Presint 18 parkrun, and did a Freedom run once.

Question 3 - Why Presint 18?

Presint 18 parkrun is the closest to my home in Presint 9. It is also a safe and convenient route.

Question 4 - What are your goals at Presint 18?

My main goal would be having many friends participating at Presint 18 parkrun and encouraging a healthy and sporting lifestyle for the local community.

Question 5 -What would you say to veteran first timers or newbie parkrunners (over the age of 50)?

I am always amazed by runners over the age of 50. Physically, the average person over the age of 50 has many limitations in muscle, joints, heart rate, and lung capacity. For most of them, running is a mix activity of social and physical nature. The social part of it actually makes the physical part easier. For first timers and newbies, Presint 18 parkrun is typical hot and humid so it is best to run easy for the first time.

Question 6 - Tell us your memorable moment at parkrun.

My most memorable and satisfying moment would be the 1st event for Presint 18 parkrun on 3 November 2018. So happy to see the work of so many involved come to life.

Question 7 - What do you think about volunteering at parkrun?

I love volunteering for parkrun. Volunteering at parkrun means an opportunity to do a good deed multiple folds by helping out friends, families, and the local community to enjoy a healthy sporting activity. A good runner needs to have at least 4 different paces, and there is no one size fits all. So, volunteering provides me that different perspective, to observe the many different running attributes and running forms.

Raja Iskandar SHAH (A 5002963)

Number of parkruns ran/walked - 4

Number of parkruns volunteered - 11

The Legends of Presint 18 parkrun Chapter 6: Noor Haryana PAZIM & Muhamad Zaki MUSA

SUR_3576

Question 1 - What is a typical day for the both of you at parkrun?

Eventhough we go for a run with our friends on Friday evening, we still make sure we get to Presint 18 parkrun the next morning. After completing our Fajr prayer, we get ready for parkrun. We usually ensure that breakfast is ready for our kids before we leave the house.

We are extremely excited for parkrun every week as we get to meet the regulars as well as new first timers and visitors. When we first met other parkrunners for the first time, we just politely smiled at them. But now we have made long-lasting friendships with those same people.

Everyone who comes to parkrun has the same mindset, ‘running’. This mindset together with the social aspect of parkrun will live long at Presint 18 parkrun.

Question 2 - Tell us about your parkrun history.

We got to know about Presint 18 parkrun from Norbee Shireen who regularly runs at Presint 18 parkrun. We then googled parkrun, got to know more about it and the rest is history. We have never regretted signing up.

Question 3 - Why Presint 18?

We live in Bangi, about 18 minutes from Presint 18 parkrun. Hence, it is close and convenient for us. Plus, the view you get at Presint 18 parkrun is to die for!

Question 4 - What are your parkrun goals?

We want to achieve PBs every week. It’s like a unit of measurement. A measurement on how much effort and how far we have got in keeping fit and leading a healthy lifestyle. We have 7 children. Juggling kids, home-making and work isn’t easy for the both of us. All we wished for is to have extra energy and stamina to go through the day with a breeze.

Question 5 - As one of Presint 18 parkrun’s regular parkrunning couple, what you say to first time or newbie parkrunning couples?

parkrun is not a competition. Just come with the mindset of wanting to chill and have fun with your partner. And over time you will notice that parkrun couples are the most romantic parkrunners!

Question 6 - Tell us a memorable moment for the both of you at parkrun.

Achieving PBs, it’s all about competing with yourself and not others. I have had 5 PBs and Zaki has had 4 PBs thus far.

Feeling good looking at happy faces regardless of age, gender, race, religion and social status. We both feel this every week at parkrun.

The bonding between husband and wife. It isn’t easy to squeeze in ‘us time’ with 7 children hence parkrun provides us the ‘us time’ we crave for every Saturday morning. Thank you, parkrun!

Question 7 - What do you both think about volunteering at parkrun?

Volunteering at parkrun brings a sense of fulfillment as we donate our time and effort for a good cause. It is also a chance to give moral support to first timers as well as regular runners. That cheering that volunteers do at the finish line is priceless for both the runner and the volunteer. I reiterate it is truly a priceless moment for all. After all, it is a great way to start the day. We are happy that we will have the opportunity to volunteer at Presint 18 parkrun for the first time in April.

The Legends of Presint 18 parkrun Chapter 5: Norbee Shireen ABDUL HAMID & family

SUR_3554

Question 1 - What is a typical day at parkrun?

Before going to bed on Friday night, I prepare mentally and physically for parkrun the next morning because waking my children up early in the morning is never easy. I usually ask them to go to bed early. It was a bit difficult for me to manage the children for the first few weeks as they are accustomed to waking up around 10am on the weekend. After attending about 4 parkrun events, the children have finally understood that Saturday is parkrunday. Nowadays, it is the children that wake me up for parkrun especially on those days when I tell them that their friends will also be coming to parkrun.

We set off for Presint 18 when the whole family is ready and usually arrive around 7.15am. We set up the stroller for the youngest child and do some light stretching before the start at 7.30am. The event is really fun and safe as parkrun has marshals along the route and a tail walker to make sure no one is left behind. Also, the scenery along the route is awesome!

The best part of parkrun is the breakfast session after the run. There, my family can catch up with everyone and share everything including our meal!

Question 2 - What is the family’s parkrun history?

The truth is the whole family didn’t know about the existence of parkrun. I came across it when Perbadanan Putrajaya’s post about Presint 18 parkrun popped up on my Facebook timeline sometime last year. Since then, we started to collect more information about parkrun. What attracted us about parkrun was that we don’t have to pay a registration fee to take part. Just register, print the barcode and you are all set! Your time will also be recorded! Our very first parkrun was on 3 November 2018, the launch of Presint 18 parkrun. Now, parkrun is a “wajib” event for our family.

Question 3 - Why Presint 18?

We choose Presint 18 parkrun because it is close to our house. And of course, the beautiful scenery!

Question 4 - What is the family’s parkrun goals?

Our ultimate goal is to stay fit and live a healthy life. Furthermore, we would like to attend parkrun every week and make it into the parkrun 50 club by the end of 2019. My son has already joined the parkrun 10 club being the first junior from Presint 18 parkrun to do so & one of the few from Malaysia to have achieve such a feat.

Question 5 - As stroller runners, what would you and your husband advise first time or newbie stroller parkrunners?

To all first time and newbie stroller parkrunners, you do not need to own a jogger stroller in order to start stroller running/jogging. Just bring whatever stroller you have to parkrun and have fun. Don’t forget your child! The run route is family and stroller friendly. Make sure when you run with a stroller, you attach the harness/safety belt. If your child wants to run, let him/her run and have fun. But remember, at parkrun under 11s must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Don’t let them run alone. Safety first!

Question 6 - How do the children feel about parkrun?

My children are very excited about parkrun because they know all their friends will be there. The can play with them after the run and participate in some post-event activities for example the group photo and birthday celebrations which usually has cakes/brownies. My 3-year-old daughter has even requested to celebrate her 4th birthday at parkrun. They really enjoy it to the max!

Question 7 - How does your mother feel about parkrun and/or does she have a message for senior female first time or newbie parkrunners (over the age of 55)?

The doctor has advised my mother, who is 59, to carry out some exercises such as brisk walking in order to keep fit and stay healthy. 5km is not an easy distance for my mother and at first, she thought she would not be able to complete the whole distance. She kept walking and completed her first parkrun in 1 hour 9 minutes. Last week, on 16 March, my mother recorded a time of 52 minutes hence improving her time by 17 minutes in the past 4 months. We are all very proud of her. To date, she has already completed 13 parkrun events. Presint 18 parkrun makes her perspire a lot. She feels great and full of energy after parkrun. Her message to all senior citizen in Putrajaya is to come and join parkrun every Saturday morning. It will make you happy and healthy because parkrun is not just a running event, it is also a platform where we can meet new people and share everything especially the common goal to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Question 8 - Tell us a memorable moment for the family at parkrun.

Every week at parkrun is a memorable one! But the most memorable moment was when my son joined the parkrun 10 club becoming the first junior from Presint 18 parkrun to achieve such a milestone. Well done, Aniq!

Question 9 - As members of the Malaysia Stroller Runners Community (MSRC), parkrun Malaysia’s second largest club (78-registered runners, 215 runs recorded to date), what impact has the club brought to parkrun in Malaysia?

Togetherness. The culture of MSRC is family-oriented. How do we engage with our kids? When we gather, we spend our time with other parents sharing stories, knowledge, tips on everything especially productive ways to engage with our kids via running/jogging. We encourage and inspire other runners to bring their kids along when they decide to go for a run. Having kids should not be an excuse not to run. We are glad to see that Presint 18 parkrun and MSRC have same principles.

Question 10 - What does the family think about volunteering at parkrun?

Volunteering at parkrun is fun and good as we can contribute something back to the community. The volunteers make parkrun happen and ensure its smoothness. We can choose do anything for example being a pacer, marshal, timekeeper, barcode scanner, tail walker and etc. Other than that, we can make it to parkrun 25 volunteer club if we manage to volunteer 25 times. My husband did pacing the other week at Presint 18 parkrun. He felt great, proud and satisfied as he managed to helped other runners achieve a new PB!

The Legends of Presint 18 parkrun Chapter 4: Lianne KRUGER

Question 1 - What is a typical day at Presint 18 parkrun?

My sister and I normally arrive around 7.15am. We do a bit of stretching, warming up and greeting familiar faces until the Run Director’s Briefing. The run starts at 7.30am and the route is great and very beautiful. Once we are done and have returned the tokens, we will sometimes stay and chat to a few people (some we know and others are new friends).

Question 2 - What is your parkrun history?

I actually joined parkrun around 2014 in my home country, South Africa. But I was a lot younger then and enjoyed sleeping in too much. Hence, I didn’t go very often. But as soon as I saw that there was parkrun in Malaysia, my sister and I decided to give it a try. I am glad we did, it’s now something I look forward to every week!

Question 3 - Why Presint 18?

I chose Presint 18 parkrun because it is not too far to travel on Saturday mornings but now, I choose it because of the people and scenery! Everyone is super friendly and encouraging. It is also an enjoyable run with wonderful scenery of the lake, trees and buildings.

Question 4 - What are your goals at Presint 18?

I had a couple of goals for the first few months of this year at Presint 18. The first one was to attend every Saturday this year but unfortunately, I have missed one already. I am hoping it will be the only one I’ll miss. My other goal was to get under 30 minutes which I have already managed to do! Because I’ve smashed one of my goals already, I have come up with a new one: to beat my sister’s parkrun time. She is much faster than me so I have a lot of hard work ahead of me.

Question 5 - What would you say about women participation (an average of 46.3%) at Presint 18 parkrun?

I always check the women participation every week and it’s good to see such a high percentage of women participants. Not only is the participation high but the support and encouragement that goes between the women is amazing! More than once I’ve have started walking from being tired and a fellow woman runner has stopped next to me and pushed me to keep going. That type of support is really incredible!

Question 6 - Tell us your memorable moment at parkrun.

My most memorable time was when I first got under 30 minutes. It was the absolute best feeling and I received good compliments and congratulations from some of the runners. It was awesome!

Question 7 - What do you think about volunteering at parkrun?

I have only volunteered once but I enjoyed it and will definitely do it again. It was nice being a marshal and encouraging the runners to keep going. It’s also an awesome way to meet new people.

Number of parkruns ran/walked - 11

Question 1 - What is a typical day at Presint 18 parkrun?

Every Friday night, I prepare my running gear for parkrun. I wake up around 5am on parkrunday. After getting ready, I will ride my motorbike to Presint 18. I usually stop to purchase water on the way. I always make sure I am happy mentally and physically for parkrun. By doing that, I always run better and try to achieve a new PB.

Question 2 - What is your parkrun history?

My first parkrun was during the launch of Presint 18 parkrun on 3 November 2018. I have ran 17 parkruns as of 2 March 2019.  I look forward to Presint 18 parkrun every week and attempt not to miss any parkrun event if possible.

Question 3 - Why Presint 18?

When I started running 4 years ago, Putrajaya was my chosen running venue. I have ran almost all possible running routes in Putrajaya and it is one of the most beautiful and safest place to run in Malaysia. The Presint 18 parkrun route is no different and I am happy that parkrun chose Presint 18 as one of their events in Malaysia.

Question 4 - What are your goals at Presint 18?

As a recreational runner, my goals are to keep fit and try to achieve new PBs. At parkrun I want to achieve a sub-20 as well as consistently maintain my parkrun times. I also hope to run Presint 18 parkrun more than 100 times.

Question 5 -What would you say to veteran first timers or newbie parkrunners (over the age of 40)?

For veteran first timers and newbies parkrunners, I urge them to make parkrun as their first step to be healthier. Use it as a platform to get to know other parkrunners as well as a mechanism to teach us how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Question 6 - Tell us your memorable moment at parkrun.

I can’t choose. For me, every Presint 18 parkrun event is memorable. Every event creates happy memories for me.

Question 7 - What do you think about volunteering at parkrun?

Volunteering at parkrun is fun. By volunteering, we can contribute something back to the community. For example, ensuring that all runners can run safely and happily at parkrun. I believe that every runner needs some form of moral support when running. By volunteering, we can do just that.

The Legends of Presint 18 parkrun Chapter 2: Nur Hidayah KHALID

51435174_2013902378904216_1049804102948618240_o

Question 1 - What is a typical day at Presint 18 parkrun?

A typical day start as early as 540am. Getting up at that time is normal for me during the weekdays but on a Saturday, which is non-working day, I take the opportunity to wake up later. Nowadays, I set my alarm at 540am on Friday night because the next day is parkrunday! After having showered and performed my Fajr prayer, I get ready for parkrun. Presint 18 is very near to my house. However, I sometimes travel all the way from my hometown in Senawang to Presint 18. On those days, I start my journey as early as 630am. As soon as I arrive at Presint 18, I will put on the volunteer vest (if I am volunteering that day) and help out at the start/finish line. If I run that week, I will usually mingle around with the volunteer team before the start.

Question 2 - What is your parkrun history?

Honestly, I had never heard about parkrun before October 2018. My office colleague who is also the Event Director of Presint 18 parkrun introduced parkrun to our office-mates in a telegram group message as Presint 18 parkrun was about to be launched. I was so interested and personally met her to ask for more details regarding parkrun. However, due to my work commitments, I could only join parkrun for the 1st time, volunteering as barcode scanner, at Event #3 on November 17. Nowadays, if I am not working on Saturday, I look forward for parkrun every week regardless of whether I am running or volunteering.

Question 3 - Why Presint 18?

The main reason is because I live in Presint 17. It is only 5 minutes to get to Presint 18. Besides that, Presint 18 was started fully by a group of multiracial Malaysians that are very ambitious. Being inspired by them, I always make an effort to come to Presint 18 parkrun even if I am in my hometown in Senawang on Friday. Just to put it out there, I admire the commitment of the core volunteers and really love the environment of Presint 18 parkrun.

Question 4 - What are your goals at Presint 18?

My goals are to improve my pace and achieve a PB. At the moment, it takes me around 45 to 49 minutes to complete parkrun. Other than that, I would like to join the parkrun 25 volunteer club this year.

Question 5 -What would you say to female first timers or newbie parkrunners (running/volunteering)?

Don't be afraid. You can see many female runners and volunteers at Presint 18 parkrun. parkrun is about challenging yourself. It doesn’t matter if you run, walk or volunteer. Come and feel the environment (the positive vibes, encouragement and support from the parkrun community and the opportunity to meet like-minded people). I bet you will fall in love with parkrun and never want to miss any single parkrun event after that.

Question 6 - Tell us your memorable moment at parkrun.

Every parkrun event is memorable for me. However, one memorable moment that i can’t forget is bringing my five-year-old daughter to parkrun and completing parkrun with her. Despite she didn’t have proper running shoes, she kept on running non-stop for the first 3 kilometres. This really surprised me and I was very impressed with my daughter’s achievement that day.

Question 7 - What do you think about volunteering at parkrun?

I would say volunteering at parkrun is such my stress reliever. The positive spirit in the volunteers just makes the environment so lively and seriously I just can’t wait for Saturday (parkrunday) to come every week. Volunteering at parkrun indirectly teaches you many things such as managing people. It can be a meaningful life lesson.

Nur Hidayah KHALID (A 5047094)

Number of parkruns ran/walked - 3

Number of parkruns volunteered - 11
